Tabs help reduce the tedious task of figuring this out. Also, guitar is an instrument that is difficult to write for unless you actually play it. Some classical composers (non-guitarists) struggled with writing passages that were practicable for guitar players that were radically inappropriate I think any system that you can use daily is best. The benefits of learning standard notation is the ability to write for many musicians and learning how multiple layers intertwine into single musical experience.
