Hello to all. Many people have asked me how to produce artificial (pinch)
harmonics on guitar. The technique is actually quite simple, but getting the
tones to come out right takes practice. You should also use a generous amount
of gain/distortion for this, because some of the harmonic node points produce
tones that are often harder to hear without distortion.
For this example, I’m going to use the 3rd fret on the 4th string (D). What you
want to do is pick the note on a down stroke, but on the pick attack you want to
mute the string with the edge of your thumb. This should produce a harmonic
with a slightly distorted edge to it. I usually come in pretty hard when I
execute artificial harmonics, and some people attack lightly. Do whatever works
best for you.
There are many different places where you can attack the string so that they’ll
produce different notes.
This was just a simple and short lesson I’d thought I’d share.
